Haywood Sixth Form Academy to provide work-based learning in real jobs

HAYWOOD Sixth Form Academy is launching an innovative Work-Based Learning Programme when it opens in 2015.

The Academy is looking to support all students’ life opportunities whether that is university or entering the world of work.

The new sixth form academy will offer a number of learning pathways and will support students’ varying ambitions to study vocationally-related courses, in partnership with successful, highly regarded companies.

Kevin Oakes, CEO at Steelite International – Haywood Sixth Form Academy’s sponsors – said: “As a world leading manufacturer of tableware, we need young people coming into the organisation with the right skills, knowledge and aptitude.

Anything we can do to support local education and to foster good relationships between education and industry is vitally important”.

The work based learning approach will involve two distinct elements:

  • Two days per week at Haywood Sixth Form Academy studying Employability Skills, Maths, English and IT to minimum Level 2.
  • Three days per week completing work experience, developing vocational skills which will be assessed in one of the partner businesses as part of an exclusive employment certificate.

Carl Ward, Executive Headteacher, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with local businesses to deliver our Work-Based Learning Programme.

The level of support and interest from companies across the city has meant that we can provide our students with a great choice of real work experience in a variety of roles. That said, we’re always keen to hear from other businesses that would like to take part in the scheme.

We’ve now got over 150 high quality businesses signed up to take part in the Work-Based Learning Programme including Steelite International, Autonet Insurance, Michelin, Dudson, Midland Heart, Business for Breakfast, Myers and Co Solicitors, the NHS and more.

This means that the students will learn the skills they need to succeed in a competitive job market which will help them in their chosen career paths.”

Stephen Hargreaves, the Academy’s Careers Development Advisor who will be working with businesses to provide the placements, said: “Some students learn more from practical work based experience and I believe quality work experience is a good foundation for students and an excellent springboard into a career.

We’ve got some great work based learning opportunities including Web Designers, IT Technicians, Teaching Assistants, Social Media Assistants, Engineers, Graphic Designers, several roles within the NHS, and more.

There are also opportunities in the HR, Finance, Manufacturing, Customer Service and Insurance industries. Our students will really be spoilt for choice”.

The Work-Based Learning Programme is a “pre-traineeship”. This is an education and training programme that is combined with real, beneficial, work experience and is focused on giving young people the skills and experience that employers are looking for. At the end of the programme the students will receive a work-based learning qualification called “The Employment Certificate” assured by Pearson/Edexcel.

All of which the Academy believes will place its students in a much stronger position to obtain future employment in a very competitive world.
