Haywood Sixth Form Academy Announces Launch Plans

ON Wednesday 19 November Haywood Sixth Form Academy hosted an open evening, launch night and careers event at Haywood Academy, High Lane, Burslem.

The new sixth form is set to open in September 2015 and will offer students a host of new opportunities from special relationships with some of the top universities in the UK and USA, to an innovative Work Based Learning programme.

Executive Headteacher, Carl Ward said: “Haywood Academy has already created a successful school community built on co-operation and learning.  We’re one of the best performing non-selective schools in the region and OFSTED rated us ‘good with exemplary features’.  We are very conscious that at 16 our students’ journey is not finished.

“Haywood Sixth Form Academy will welcome students from other schools, as well as those already studying at Haywood.  It is a new type of sixth form aimed at preparing students for the modern world.  We are working in partnership with employers, including our sponsor Steelite International, to develop the sixth form so that we prepare our students for real apprenticeships and job opportunities.  We have excellent links with universities and a supportive careers team and staff to assist students into meaningful careers.”

An exciting £2.1 million development will transform Burslem Town Hall and its surroundings into a brand new state-of-the-art learning centre.  The investment will see 400 students move into the beautiful old town hall.  The single storey Ceramica building will be demolished and a two-storey classroom and office block will be built on the site.

Learning will be accommodated across the whole town hall building, with classrooms and workspaces on all floors.  There will be an IT-based learning support centre, a library and break out zones for informal study and relaxing.

The sixth form will offer first class facilities and support for a full range of A Level and BTEC courses. A unique range of work-related and work based learning placements will be available with large and small businesses.

Haywood Sixth Form Academy has partnered with Steelite International, Dudson, Michelin, Autonet, Midland Heart, Business for Breakfast and Myers and Co Solicitors to develop a bespoke curriculum to support students in the transition from education to the work place.

Visitors to the open evening on Wednesday 19 November met the teaching staff and representatives from the businesses and partner universities involved.

Haywood Sixth Form Academy will inspire young people and offer first class support to help them succeed and progress into university, apprenticeships or work.
