Employability and Life Skills (ELS)

The Haywood Sixth Form Academy is offering a unique programme of employability and life skills.  The programme is bespoke to each individual and offers a supported, nurturing and inclusive environment for all.

As part of the programme, students will:

  • Gain BTEC qualifications in personal, social development, work skills and work experience
  • Study functional skills English and maths
  • Support from The Prince’s Trust
  • Undergo small, supported work experience placements and larger, unsupported placements where necessary
  • Gain a qualification in ‘Jamie Oliver’s Home Cooking Skills’ in conjunction with Edexcel
  • Take part in a comprehensive travel training programme and gain award in ‘Safer Road Skills and Attitudes’ endorsed by the DVLA and Edexcel
  • Learn about budgeting skills as they approach adulthood
  • Access outstanding pastoral care
  • Have independent careers advice
  • Access a programme of enrichment
  • In year 13, access tasters in vocational areas they would like to study once they have left Haywood Sixth Form Academy
  • All students on the programme will have support from members of the Learning Support Team and Independent Skills Practitioners

How do students join the Employability & Life Skills (ELS) at Haywood Sixth Form Academy?

Year 11 Haywood Academy students should:

  • Apply via an application form to be considered for the ELS programme

External applicants should:

  • Contact Mr Nathan Legg, Learning Support Manager, to arrange an appointment
  • Students will then undergo informal assessments to assess whether Haywood Sixth Form Academy is the right environment for the student
  • If it is agreed then students should apply either via the application form or online via UCAS
  • Students will then be invited for an interview
  • If accepted onto the programme, transition visits can be made on a case-by-case basis
